San Bernardino: Was ISIS Behind the Attack?

December 10, 2015

Most of the world is well aware that on December 2, two heavily armed, radicalized Muslim individuals entered a staff holiday party at a San Bernardino, California community center and killed 14 people.

In the days since that shocking event, it has become increasingly clear that Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife were, at minimum, inspired by propaganda from the Islamic State. They may have even been funded by the group.

Federal law enforcement authorities are currently trying to identify the source of a $28,500 deposit to Farook’s bank account roughly two weeks prior to the shooting. The amount represents more than half of the former health inspector’s annual salary.

Yes, virtually everyone now knows about this terrorist incident. What many people are now discovering is that one of the victims was a devout Messianic Jew—a coworker of Farook’s named Nicholas Thalasinos.

Thalasinos was an active and vocal defender of Israel on social media. In recent days, reports have emerged that he had engaged Farook in debate about Israel’s right to exist several weeks prior to the massacre.

According to a co-worker, Thalasinos had overheard Farook asserting that Israel was not the Jewish homeland and that Jews don’t belong there. Thalasinos had challenged Farook on those statements and a heated argument had ensued.

No one is suggesting that these interactions were the reason for the killing spree. But it is noteworthy that the news about Thalasinos’ death is making millions of people more aware of the Messianic movement. It is no small thing that the term “Messianic Jew” is now being widely used in news stories.

In a season in which remarkable world events seem to be unfolding faster than the news media can track them, we here at Jewish Voice are more committed than ever to keeping you apprised of developments with prophetic significance.

We’re also utilizing every medium at our disposal to educate, illuminate, and persuade others to stand with Israel and with Jewish People around the world, even as we equip and nurture new Messianic congregations in key places around the world.
